Chapter 15

Steel

Sitting in church, listening to Chevron drone on and on about the virtues of prostitution, turned my stomach. I now knew what he did to Cora’s mother. He’d never thought much of women in general. His father taught him that they were weak, stupid, and disposable. He’d never had a relationship that lasted more than a few weeks, and even gave up on those years ago. Now, he was always on the prowl for new club whores or prostitutes he could wring a little fun out of before tossing them to the wolves, better known as my club brothers.

He asked for volunteers to monitor the red-light district he was trying to build this weekend. I raised my hand because I’d at least make sure the women stayed safe.

My hand caught Chevron’s eye, and he snorted a laugh. “Hell the fuck no, Steel. You’d be serving them milk and cookies and reading them fucking bedtime stories instead of pimping the bitches out.”

Half the room hooted with laughter, but I’d long since stopped caring what most of them thought of me.

Orb jerked his chin in my direction and spoke up. “I’ll do it. You know I’m all about the money, boss.”

“Yeah, you are. I want you to keep them turning tricks. Don’t let them slack off or go for the cheap tricks, either. Those bitches can make money when they’re properly motivated. Just remember, ten percent of everything they make goes right into your pocket at the end of the night. Ten percent of nothing is nothing, brother.”

Orb’s prosthetic eye roamed aimlessly around, although his good eye was trained squarely on Chevron. “I’m hearing you loud and clear, boss.”

I relaxed, knowing Orb would do right by them, or as right as any of us could in shitty situations like this one.

“Steel, I want you and Ax working with Diavonte’s men again. You have a knack for sweet talking, so you can use that to get them on board with paying the protection money that’s so fucking important to Don Diavonte.”

“Yes, sir,” I responded.

My wheels turned as I struggled to figure out how to obtain a DNA sample from Chevron. Trying to get ahold of something he’d put his mouth on would draw too much notice. There was no way I could get into his room to grab his hairbrush. His personal space was behind double-locked doors, and he rarely even took whores back there. The quickest and easiest way would be to start a fight with him and get his blood on my clothing or just snatch a fistful of his hair.

He’d given me a halfway decent excuse to start a brawl with him by disrespecting me in front of my club brothers. Although I normally let that shit slide, Chevron would definitely jump a man’s shit for anything to do with disrespect. Since that shit was not done in church, I bided my time, waiting for the best moment to pick a fight with him.

The only thing that might give Chevron pause would be me picking fights with him, because that was not our normal dynamic.
